About Us
The GQMF Piranhas is Cobb County's oldest neighborhood swim team. We are a neighborhood, summer-only (May – June) recreational swim team that competes against other neighborhood teams [in swimming jargon usually summer teams are recreational and year round teams are “competitive”]. Any athlete between the ages of 5 - 18 on May 31st is eligible to swim on the team. Ages 3 and 4 are eligible for our rookie program.
Swimmers are expected to be able to swim the full 25 yards of the pool unassisted without touching the lane lines and/or the walls during tryouts. Some freestyle strokes should be evident during the 25. If swimmers are unable to swim the length of the pool unassisted, the coaches will work with the swimmer to meet this requirement. Swimmers will not be able to compete in a meet until they are able to swim the full length. Swimmers should demonstrate, but are not required to complete, 25 backstroke as well. All swimmers are expected to practice once per week and attend at least two swim meets.
Other than the coaches, the team is run 100% with volunteers. Each family is responsible for volunteering to work at least two of the five meets. We track volunteer effort using a point system and each family must complete a minimum of 9 points to keep member status. Volunteer jobs include lane timers, awards, scorekeepers, etc. We have made the signup process for volunteer jobs during the season as easy as possible. You will be expected to meet the minimum volunteer requirements each year. Any family who does not meet the minimum volunteer 9 points per season will pay a $50 fee for unfilled service hours. The Piranhas could not happen without all the parents helping as it takes many volunteers to run multiple Swim Meets (Home and Away), prepare social activities, order gear, throw an end of season party and more! Any money raised by the Piranhas ultimately goes back to our swimmers and parents by paying for coaching, pools, equipment, social activities, t-shirts, medals, trophies and everything else. This is what makes the Piranhas fabulous!
GQMF Piranhas Home Meets are held at the beautiful GQMF Pool, 5 lane, 25yd Pool.
The GQMF Piranhas swim team is part of the Cobb Summer Swim League. The CSSL is a summer swim league composed of community and subdivision swim teams in the Cobb area. Teams compete every week between mid-May and the end of June. A Championship meet called Patti Wilder is conducted toward the end of the season with swimmers competing from each team.
This year GQMF Piranhas will participate in the East division in the Silver league along with the Indian Hills, Jacksons Creek, North Forest, Somerset and Princeton Mill. The team will swim meets, rotating between these community pools. Our home pool is located at the GQMF Pool 2842 Gant Quarters Drive, Marietta GA 30068. Practices will be held at our home pool.
The Cobb Summer Swim League was formed to create a friendly atmosphere for the benefit and personal satisfaction of our children. The league strives to offer an opportunity for children and young people to challenge themselves, to learn and think in a positive manner, to be part of a team and enjoy the experience of friendly competition and good sportsmanship.
The summer league season is a fast paced 2-month period but everyone who experiences it has a great time, makes new friends and looks forward to the next year.
